Marble Etch Repair & Shine Restoration in Central Singapore
Etch marks are the dull, cloudy spots and rings that appear where something acidic touched the marble: lemon juice, vinegar, soft drinks, wine, tomato sauce or a bathroom cleaner. The acid dissolves a thin layer of the polished surface. Cleaning won't remove it, but honing and re-polishing will, and the shine comes back to match the rest of the stone.

What etch repair includes
- Checking how deep the etching is
- Light etching: polishing compound to bring the shine back
- Deeper etching: diamond honing, then polishing
- Blending the area into the surrounding shine
- Sealing and advice on safe cleaners
Signs of etching
- Dull rings where glasses or bottles stood
- Cloudy patches where cleaner was sprayed
- Rough or dull drips on vanity tops
- Dull trails where a mop with the wrong cleaner went
- Shine gone around the sink or stove
Etch Repair & Marble Shine: what you should know
Why marble etches
Marble is made of calcium carbonate, which reacts with acid. Even mild acids such as lemon, vinegar, cola, wine and many bathroom and kitchen cleaners eat into the polished surface in seconds. The mark is physical damage, not dirt, which is why scrubbing doesn't help.
Light vs deep etching
Light etching only affects the shine and can usually be polished out with a marble polishing compound. Deeper etching feels rough and needs diamond honing to take the surface back to undamaged stone before polishing. We check which you have before quoting.
Can a sealer stop etching?
No. Sealers stop liquids soaking in, but acid still reacts with the surface. The best protection is using pH-neutral cleaners, coasters and trays, and wiping acidic spills straight away. A honed (matt) finish also shows etching much less than gloss.

Frequently asked questions
What is an etch mark on marble?
A dull or cloudy spot where acid has dissolved the polished surface. It is lighter than the stone, while a stain is darker.
Can etch marks be removed?
Yes. Light etching is polished out; deeper etching is honed first. The shine is restored to match the rest of the stone.
Can I fix etching myself?
Very light etching can sometimes be improved with a marble polishing powder. Deeper etching needs diamond pads and a machine, and DIY attempts often leave a patchy finish.
Which cleaners cause etching?
Anything acidic: vinegar, lemon-based cleaners, limescale removers, many bathroom sprays and some all-purpose cleaners. Use a cleaner labelled pH-neutral or safe for natural stone.
